Clinton and Obama on Colbert Report

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 12:03:47 PDT
Indecision 2008 has almost become legitimate political news media. Unlike 4 years ago (if my memory serves me well) along with the addition of The Colbert Report, The Daily Show's Indecision 2008 coverage of the presidential race has been able to secure candidates repeatedly, and last night Stephen Colbert got BOTH plus the last to fall, Edwards.

MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer Does The Right Wing's Job For Them

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 12:35:29 PDT
There really is no excuse for anything posing as a news network to claim that ‘the blogs are buzzing about this one” and promote it so when any cursory search on the internets would have found numerous examples of just how specious a charge it was — like the video shot from the side here. As John Cole put it: “Notice something problematic?

CBC: It’s a “bungle”! No it’s a “blunder”! Hang on: it’s a “gaffe”!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:43:41 PDT
CBC: It’s a “bungle”! No it’s a “blunder”! Hang on: it’s a “gaffe”! It ain’t good, that’s for sure! Just yesterday I had to update my Monday blog entry because the fair and balanced state-owned CBC Newsworld kept changing its mind about the Conservative government’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Bernier, and how to officially describe his, um, verbal malfunction. On Monday I showed you how Canada’s cable news networks—the state-owned one and the citizen-owned one against which t

Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up! The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas. (Of course they don’t have the foggiest clue what they’re talking about, but they pretend they do.) Even as I was writing this, the state-owned CBC did a story about the latest rise in gas prices. Apparently it’s getting h

Econometrics and search engine...

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 02:32:45 PDT
Submitted by: Chalibaeus The idea is this: track trends for given keywords (or keywords on a given web of pages) in relation to how densely websites that link together contain that keyword. Use this to create a keyword "gravity" table and use more highly-occurring keywords as "context keywords" for each other. Track context-linked keywords in relation to each other to predict niche trends, auction trends, and offer entrepreneurs acute insight on how to improve their search statistics. Thi

"Here's what the publisher of this book does." The speaker was John Van Diest. The setting was the meeting hall of the Louisiana Baptist Convention in Alexandria, where a roomful of authors and would-be-writers had gathered to sop up the creative drippings from the mind of this "Publisher of the Year," so named by his peers in that industry. He was speaking of the first book from the pen of one of our most popular Christian pastor-writers. "He has put out many books since this first one, each

Targeting the baby boomer generation

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 03:22:12 PDT
I've written about all sorts of interesting things on this blog, but never before have I written about something like this. In fact, I didn't even know they existed, but apparently a bath lift like this is in great with aging Baby Boomers. From a retail standpoint, all products and services targeted at this age group of consumers, especially things that make their life more comfortable, are sure

What Power Looks Like

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 05:03:45 PDT
Newsweek had an interesting article recently about the new elite - "They ride on Gulfstreams, set the global agenda, and manage the credit crunch in their spare time. They have more in common with each other than their countrymen. Meet the Superclass.". The Fed's evolving crisis-management playbook underscores not only the move toward more public-private collaboration on big global issues, but also the concentration of power among a very select and insular group of players—in this case, the head

Start small

This weekend’s Life 3.0 column: These days, it seems harder to avoid “green” products than it is to find them. Everything from construction material to accessories (a biodegradable umbrella) and from automobiles to pet products makes being an eco-friendly consumer almost as easy as finding a Dunkin Donuts in the Capital Region. Earth Day has been around for nearly 40 years — since 1970 — but the real environmental push has seemed to surge in recent years. The Toyota Prius hit the U.S. in 200

They report that ... the superrich have been getting an increasing slice of the economic pie. In 1980, the top 0.01 percent of the population had 0.87 percent of total income. The End of an Era, The Stinehour Press is Closing!

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 06:41:21 PDT
I find this post very disturbing to write and a sad reflection on our current economic situation here in the US, as well as an unfortunate look at the trend in book publishing to find the cheapest and “good enough” printing press for the production of Fine Art Books. Where are most “fine art” books printed now?…China! That is not to say that
